SP Cup deal to be announced
By BURI GABI

SP Brewery will be announcing its sponsorship package for the 2009 SP Cup competition this week.

Chairman of PNGRFL Albert Veratau said this season is going to be the last year of the three-year deal.
Veratau added that PNGRFL is also negotiating with other potential sponsors besides SP Brewery for future sponsorship of the country’s premier rugby league competition.
PNGRFL Board and SP Brewery officials will be meeting this week to finalize arrangements for 2009 competition.

Also to be discussed at the meeting are the draws and the traveling arrangements for teams to be finalized.

Veratau confirmed that eight teams will be vying for the prestigious cup and four venues for all the matches throughout the year.

He said that there were some last minute negotiations with possible businesss houses to come to the rescue of Lae Bombers, who need a major following the withdrawal of longtime supporter Lae Builders and Contractors.

The other teams confirmed are Bintangor Lahanis, Agmark Gurias, Mabey and Johnson Muruks, Toyota Mioks, Civpac Vipers, Master Mak Rangers and Bingtagor Eagles.

He also stated that Goroka, Kokopo, Port Moresby and Lae will be the venues for the games.
Chairman Veratau sympathized with the Lae Bombers team who now do not have a sponsor to support them in 2009 competition after Lae Builders and Contractors decided to pull out.

Veratau said Lae Bombers is a foundation club in the SP Cup competition and their exclusion would be a very sad day for rugby league in the second largest city.

There are few business houses who have indicated their support to rescue the Bombers team according to Veratau. He further stressed that PNGRFL is doing all it can to assist the team from rainy Lae.
