Pom softball leaders crash
By JACK AMI

COMPETITION leaders Bears and inform United Sisters crashed yesterday in the Port Moresby women’s softball.

Bears went down to Stingers while the Sisters fell to a determined Wantoks in the other game.

While leaders Bears fell to the sword of Stingers in the top of the table clash, the loss does not affect their standing.
United Sisters who upset Stingers the previous weekend could displace third placed Wantoks in what was a tightly contested affair until both teams final turns at bat.

In the other matches, Chebu defeated Admiralty 6-4 while Beehives Gazelle nailed a helpless Brown Eagles 14-2.

In the Bears/Stingers match, Stingers had to return a favour on the reigning champions as they erased the bitter memories of a 7-0 hiding in the first round.

Stingers hurler Selina Karai had the upper hand restricting Bears even though there were runners on bases as the representative player combined well with catcher Nicky Simba.

Stingers never looked back at their first turn at bat with Selina Karai and Alice Kalas crossing the home plate to take the lead.

They continued their batting onslaught in the next inning with Nicky Simba and younger sister Dulcie coming home to extend their lead.

Bears should blame themselves for uncharacteristic errors in their fielding which saw them spill catchable balls and poor batting made things worse.

Stingers final run came from Dorcas Horis while Bears only run was scored by veteran Delin Bais at the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Wantoks and Sisters match went down to the wire when newcomers Sisters scored at their last turn at bat.

It came off a hit by designated hitter Sue Tarasomo to bring Belinda Tamilong home to lead 1-0.

But Wantoks, determined to maintain their winning form, replied with a good hit by their inform batter Addie Tamti as she crossed home to level the score.

With a full bases loaded with runners, pinch hitter and veteran Ensie Tovia was brought in to bat for Lisa Polum.

The old hand did wonders when she sent a hit to second base and a throw home by Georgina Moke in an attempt to put out Wantoks Mathilda Moe failed.

Kolish Banam stormed home from that passed ball by catcher Robertha Kaul to wrap up the match 3-1.
