Natural talents prepare for SP Cup spots
By STEVEN KAMBULU
SCOUTING for natural talent with
the view of fielding a much stronger
team in this year’s SP Cup comeptition
is the main objective of the challenged
set for next week.
The tournament, driven by former
Kumul captain Kera Ngaffin and
Masta Mak Rangers franchise owner
Kelly Ayok, was initially slated for
this weekend.
No reason was given for the
change of dates but it gives organisers
to prepare for a much better competition.
Tournament coordinator, Kera
Ngaffin said last week that the event
will be used to select a balanced SP
Cup team comprising players from
all regions of the country.
“It would be nice to see Papuans
make up the team for either Masta
Mak City Rangers or
CIVPAC/NCDC Vipers and that will
give a good balance in regard to
regions.
“In my days we had a good mixture
of players for all corners of PNG
but not as seen in these days,”
Ngaffin said.
That has not been the case in
recent years with players from the
Highlands dominating teams due to
varying reasons.
Masta Mak Rangers despite fielding
a numdber of Kumuls had a very
ordinary debut year in the SP Cup
and hopefully with the new format of
selecting players on form rather than
reputation would realise an improved
season.
Meanwhile Suburban rugby league
chairman, Billy Yaki is not happy
with the Bomana off season rugby
football league for nominating a
team to take part in the Port Moresby
SP Cup challenge.
Yaki said Bomana had not brought
their intention of fielding a team to
our attention and being under the
umbrella of Suburban competition,
they had no right to field a team.
However his assistant Zita Sika
Snr said the concept of the challenge
was to identify natural talent and
expose as many players they could.
It is believed Yaki would might
pursue suspending Bomana which
should be very interesting.
However Ngaffin has give his
blessing to Bomana and their team is
ready to put up a good fight during
the trials.
