Doctor deplores attack on colleague
By WILLIE PALME

A DOCTOR at Port Moresby General Hospital's intensive care unit was attacked by the father of a patient on Wednesday night.

And the hospital's director of medical services, Dr Simon Mete has deplored the assault on his staff member and warned the public not to repeat such an attack.

According to a statement from Dr Mete's office, the unnamed doctor has received lacerations to his face and head injuries and was treated the at the hospital.
"The attack on the doctor was for no good reason and this type of attack has put fear in doctors and this has affected our doctors who are caring for other sick patients at the hospital." The assailant was arrested, charged and locked up at the Hohola police station.

Dr Mete also reported a scaling down of the Port Moresby hospital's services to "absolute emergencies only".

He said the nurses comprise the bulk of the hospital's staff members and with the strike going on, most of the hospital clinical services are closed.
"Only a handful of doctors and community health workers that are few in number are trying their best to maintain the emergency services.

"The public is advised to look after themselves and those that are sick are asked to seek medical treatment at private health facilities that are available in the city during this period."
