"Make good and fine decisions on a day to day basis and create the university a safer and pleasant place to live and study for the citizens of this country and the Pacific."
This was the message delivered to the students by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ross Hynes at the University of Papua New Guinea in his meeting with students at the University this week.
He said it was pleasing and satisfying to note that much of the problem was diminishing like the decrease in the rate of female student pregnancies. The number of student pregnancies fell from 20 the previous year to five last year.
On the other hand, he said alcohol related issues were still a common problem encountered at the institution and warned students of possible termination and expulsion if they offenders would not change after his message.
The Vice Chancellor said taking in of other intoxicated drugs like marijuana is as well not allowed by the institution and students caught involving in such practices will be referred to the university agency concerned.
He further stated that, as of this year, a zero-tolerance on alcohol, and other associated drugs on the campus was to be observed. There is also a total ban on the sale of betelnuts and cigarettes in and around the campus.
This was in view of the fact that the University was planning and setting up to host some major national events like the Papua New Guinea Business Update and many more in the pipeline, he said.
He furthermore urged students to promote safer sex but pointed out it was not compulsory but must be considered if students were considering stable relationships that could result in marriage.
He also said that the university's security Base could be considered for potential social entertainment midpoint if the students wanted some form of socialization with other university neighborhood like the lecturing staff.
But such places and events should be well-thought out, controlled and managed well, the Vice Chancellor said.
