District plan gets backing
By Reporter

South Fly MP Sali Subam and PNGSDP chief program officer Camilus Midire announcing their partnership

Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program Ltd (PNGSDP) has announced that it was providing financial support towards building the capacity of the South Fly District of Western Province.

The company's support comes after the Member for South Fly Sali Subam approached PNGSDP in 2008 for funding assistance to develop a five year development plan for his district.

This is the first time PNGSDP has directly partnered an MP through the Joint District Planning and Budget Priority Committee (JDP & BPC).

During a ceremony at the company's assistance was announced and accepted, PNGSDP special project officer Camillus Midire said: "We recognize the leadership of the Member for South Fly in fostering development of his district and PNGSDP is willing and happy to support his efforts." According to MP Subam the PNGSDP funds will be used for the formulating and designing of a development plan as well as proposals to solicit and secure financial and technical assistances from resource developers and foreign donors.

PNGSDP is currently undertaking and investigating major projects in the South Fly district and hopes these would figure in the development plan.
Such projects, among others include a major deep water port on Daru Island, a barramundi hatchery on Daru that is nearing completion, rehabilitation and improvements to the Daru water supply and construction of a sewage system which is under discussions with PNG Water Board.

PNGSDP will provide K180,000 over a period of six months for consultancy work and the formulation of the district development plan.
