KAIRUKU Hiri MP Paru Aihi on Friday presented an ambulance to Bereina Health Centre in Central province as part of his drive to deliver health services to his people.

The member said it is his wish to see his people have access to vital health services and funds from the district must be put to good use.

Mr Aihi said he has already started implementing his District Service Improvement Program(DSIP) and wants it to be used as a guideline to work on some major projects.

The MP said funding comes under DSIP program in which K4 million so far is now being used to improve government services like health, education, road maintenance, water supply projects and to curtail law and order problems.

The ambulance, which was purchased at a cost of K115,000 will now bring relief to the people in Bereina who have been without transport to bring patients to Port Moresby General Hospital.

Mr Aihi appealed to health workers not to misuse the ambulance. He warned them that those caught misusing government facilities will be appropriately dealt with.

"Government facilities should not be used for family purposes," he said.
He called on health officers in charge of Bereina Health Centre to implement a user pay policy in which patients coming to the clinic have to pay some minimum medical fees to help the hospital sustain its daily operations.

The member is now working closely with his Joint District Budget Planning and Budget Priority Committee on other major projects before he gets the remaining K6 million from the 2008 budget allocation.

District Health Coordinator for Kairuku Sister Rebecca Naime commended the member for the move.
