Oro police chief backs calls for larger force
By Buri Gabi

ORO Provincial Police Commander has supported calls made by the Police Union leaders Robert Ali and Clemence Kanau to increase the number of police manpower in the country.

Chief Superintendent Ani said the Prime Minister Grand Chief Sir Micheal Somare has already made a commitment last year and it must be implemented to curb sharp increase in law and order problems in the country.

The current number of members in the force is not enough when put into various divisions which ends in a shortfall in the frontline policing.

He pointed out that there are various divisions in the police department and four thousand policeman and woman are all scattered in all the divisions which sees a very big shortfall in the ratio of policemen to citizens of the country.

Commander Ani also stressed that requirements of recruiting new members must be strict to see a well disciplined police force in the country.
Some new recruits who can not cope with strong discipline and tough training in college have decided to walk off the training while others have fulfilled their commitments.

Police Association leaders Robert Ali and Clemence Kanau raised similar sentiments earlier urging the government Ministers to push the agenda in the National Executive Council meeting in Wabag.
The two union leaders said if there is an uprising at the same time in provincial capitals throughout the country police will not contain the lawlessness.

The two leaders stated that they do not want PNG to be faced with such a situation if their call falls on deaf ears of our leaders in the government.
